Two Crashes Tie Up Highway 97 Tuesday

REDMOND, OR -- Oregon State Police and other emergency crews responded to a head-on crash about one mile south of Redmond. OSP investigators say a Ford Explorer was southbound on the highway when it crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a Honda Pilot and a GMC Yukon at about 4:30 p.m., Tuesday.

The driver of the Explorer, 38-year old Bobby Howie of Redmond, and her five passengers were injured. OSP says a six-year-old was critically wounded and flown to St. Charles Bend for treatment.

The driver of the Yukon, 66-year-old Virgil Wynia of Redmond, and the driver of the Pilot, 45-year-old Patricia Beamer of Redmond, were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Highway 97 was fully closed for about an hour and a half. Partial closures continued to accommodate the investigation; the highway fully reopened after 8 p.m.

It was the second crash along the same stretch of Highway 97 on Tuesday. A two-car crash at about 10 a.m. held up traffic for about an hour. Investigators say 78-year-old Harvey Wax of Michigan pulled out of a driveway and into the path of a southbound car. Wax and his wife were taken to St. Charles Bend with non-life threatening injuries.
