Region On Track for Record Summer

BEND, OR -- Central Oregon is on track for a record-breaking summer tourism season. Alana Hughson with the Central Oregon Visitors Association says there was concern that numbers would drop off after a poor ski season and early spring. "While the outdoor recreation began earlier with some assets able to open up, the Cascade Lakes Loop opening early, we didn’t see a decline in visitation at all; just the opposite of that. We’ve seen off the charts visitation over this summer."

She tells KBND the drought does not appear to be stopping tourists, "I believe that because drought is really something the entire west is facing, people are still choosing to travel and they realize if they have to modify any of their activities because of the drought, that that’s just a part of the landscape that we find ourselves in. I believe we’re really fortunate that we haven’t seen impacts by fire tremendously this season, and certainly we’re only halfway through the summer season so we’ll keep our fingers crossed."

Hughson says COVA’s new Sunriver Visitors Center received nearly a thousand more people in July than expected.
