Madras Man Charged With Att'd Murder of Toddler

MADRAS, OR -- A Madras man is accused of trying to kill his girlfriend's two-year old son. Jefferson County Deputies arrested 21-year-old Josue Jair Mendoza-Melo early Monday morning on several charges, including Attempted Murder and First Degree Assault. He's scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

The boy's mother says she returned home Sunday night to find her son Ezra unresponsive with a bump on his head and blood in his mouth. She rushed him to the Madras hospital where he was evaluated before being air-lifted to OHSU in Portland. She says he's undergone brain surgery, has had seizures and suffered a brain bleed, among other injuries.

She says in a Facebook post that Mendoza-Melo admitted to abusing the toddler. He's being held on a million dollars' bail. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help cover Ezra's medical expenses.
