Boxcar And Jack Knife Fires Grow

MAUPIN, OR -- Fire managers say wildland crews accomplished "significant containment" on both the Boxcar Fire, burning south and east of Maupin, and the Jack Knife Fire, near Grass Valley.

As of Monday morning, the Boxcar Fire was estimated at nearly 96,000 acres and 47% contained. Fire crossed over the dozer line on Sunday, and an additional spot fire was detected, although aerial crews were able to drop retardant and bring it under control.

The Jack Knife Fire grew to 14,772 acres and 65% contained. Ground crews made progress burning containment lines, Sunday.

John Day River miles 68-55 remain closed to campers. And, a Level One (Be Ready) evacuation oder is in place for the area between Highway 97 and 197, the Deschutes River and South Junction Road.
