Fire East of La Pine Prompts Evacuation Warning

LA PINE, OR -- Central Oregon firefighters responded to three new incidents on the Deschutes National Forest, Sunday. The largest, northeast of McKay Butte and east of La Pine, prompted a Level One evacuation warning ("be ready") for McKay Crossing, Prairie and Ogden campgrounds. The three campgrounds are located west of Paulina Lake.

The McKay Butte Fire was first spotted by Lava Butte Lookout at about 3 p.m. As of Sunday night, it was estimated at 90 acres. A heavy air tanker, two single engine air tankers and a Type Three helicopter worked the fire lines over the weekend, along with multiple engines and dozers.

Two other fires near Black Butte and west of La Pine, off Burgess Road, were contained at under a third of an acre. All three are under investigation.

UPDATE (7:30 a.m.): As of Monday morning, fire managers estimate the McKay Butte Fire is 190 acres. They say the fire was active through the night, with winds driving flames to the southeast. The Level One evacuation warning remains in place for the three campgrounds.
