Portland Man Claims He Was Victim Of Hate Crime

BEND, OR -- A Portland man, identified as Michael Olson of Portland, claims he was the victim of a hate crime while camping in the China Hat Road area over the weekend. However, the Deschutes County Sheriff and Portland Police say they have not been able to locate Olson to verify the claim. Olson, who is black, told Central Oregon Daily News he thought someone tried to enter his vehicle early Monday morning. Olson says later he went into the woods to relieve himself and thought he had been punched but it turned out he was stabbed with a knife. Olson said his thick clothing and a cellphone in his front breast pocket saved him. Olson said he ran and got back to his vehicle to find it spray painted with a swastika, a racial slur and the words “Go Home.” The sheriff’s office says they have an active investigation and will continue to try to locate Olson.
