Scott Schaier Running For Deschutes County Sheriff

BEND, OR -- A 6-year veteran of the Bend Police Department is running for sheriff. Scott Schaier has worked as a patrol officer and is a member of the Central Oregon Response Team and is currently a School Resource Officer. Schaier says his three main goals if elected will be to rebuild public trust…focus on school safety and…build innovative responses to the opioid, homelessness and mental health crisis issues. In 2016 Schaier shot and killed 31-year-old Michael Jacques of Bend after pulling him over for erratic driving. The Oregon Department of Justice ruled they found insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against Schaier. A civil lawsuit on behalf of Jacques family was settled in 2018 after the insurance company for the City of Bend paid an 800-thousand-dollar settlement.
