The legislation would have extended healthcare, education and job training benefits for veterans.

Republicans said the 21 billion dollar package was too expensive.

Washington State Democratic Senator Patty Murray spoke for others who supported the legislation -- like Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, on the floor of the Senate.

"Can we show these heroes that despite our differences, we will work diligently to get the healthcare and benefits they've earned?"

The legislation was the largest veterans bill in decades.  It would have funded 27 new clinics and medical centers and made V-A healthcare more accessible.

In a press release, Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley said "Supporting our veterans should not be a partisan issue.  Unfortunately, Republicans are putting politics over good policy for out veterans."
