Hales Proposes $3.5(B) Budget

(Portland, OR)  --  The three-point-five-billion-dollar budget proposed by Portland Mayor Charlie Hales includes about 49-million-dollars more than was available last year.  The mayor says he wants to spend about 20-million-dollars of that surplus on street projects, including maintenance and the addition of safety improvements.  Hales says he wants to create new positions in the Police Bureau to implement the federal settlement agreement to end the use of excessive force against mentally ill suspects.  He also wants to use city money to restore Portland firefighter positions that were cut during the recession but retained with federal dollars.
