Independent Party Could Gain Major-Party Status

(Salem, OR)  --  The Independent Party could gain major-party status in Oregon.  The "Portland Tribune" reports the Secretary of State's Office is scheduled to announce next week whether the Independent Party of Oregon has enough registered voters to qualify for major-party status.  Should that happen, the state will be required to finance and hold its 2016 primary election, and the party's winning candidates will appear on the general-election ballot with the Democratic and Republican nominees.  This year's voter-registration deadline is August 16th.
