House Approves More Security Checks On Syrian Refugees

(Washington, DC)  --  A bill that passed handily in the House would require three federal agencies to step up security checks on Syrian and Iraqi refugees before they're allowed into the U.S.  The vote was 289-to-137, with all six Democrats in the Washington state delegation voting against the bill and all four GOP members voting in favor.  Representative Kurt Schrader was the only Democrat in the Oregon House delegation to vote for the bill.  The measure is under threat of a veto by President Obama, who says he plans to allow ten-thousand Syrian refugees to settle in the U.S. in the next year.
