Methodist Conference Set To Tackle LGBT Rights, Abortion

(Portland, OR)  --  LGBT rights, abortion, and gun violence are up for discussion over the next two weeks at the United Methodist Church General Conference in Portland.  The conference, which gets underway today, brings members and clergy together every four years to set church policy.  Right now it's against the rules for clergy to perform same-sex marriages, but a new proposal would allow it on a case-by-case basis decided locally.  The conference will also discuss supporting laws that reduce gun violence and promote religious freedom for all faiths and denominations.
