Hales To Press For Police Pay Raises

(Portland, OR)  --  Portland Mayor Charlie Hales says he'll press for more money for police officers during the remainder of his term in office.  Officials say the Portland Police Bureau is experiencing a serious shortage of patrol officers, and the mayor says salary increases would help combat that problem.  The "Portland Tribune" reports Hales plans to push the need for raises in upcoming council discussions, and he says a potential marijuana tax could help fund the increases.  The police bureau has lost officers to retirement and to other law-enforcement agencies that offer better pay.
