(Washington, DC) -- Family, friends, and colleagues are remembering a Portland native who died while on assignment in Afghanistan. National Public Radio photographer and video editor David Gilkey died yesterday, along with translator Zabihulla Tamanna. NPR says Gilkey and Tamanna were in an armored Humvee driven by a soldier of the Afghan National Army, and all were killed after the Humvee was hit by rocket-propelled grenades. Gilkey attended Wilson High School and studied photojournalism at Oregon State University before becoming a newspaper photojournalist. He won multiple awards during his career.
