Two Arrested For Gillnetting In Sanctuary

CELILO VILLAGE, OR -- State Police arrested two people this week, after receiving several complaints of illegal gillnetting on the Columbia River at the Deschutes River Sanctuary.

Troopers conducted a nighttime patrol and found a boat operating without required lighting in the sanctuary. They had deployed an 1100-foot gillnet; state law limits gillnets to 800 feet, and no gillnetting is allowed in the sanctuary. Investigators also found 85 Chinook Salmon and one Steelhead, worth over $3,500.

There were two adults and a child aboard the boat; 26-year-old Lane Meanus and 24-year-old Ashley Leslie, both of Celilo Village, were arrested for multiple crimes.
