(Portland, OR) -- County leaders are working to fix a computer formula that nearly released a murder suspect from the Multnomah County Jail. Willamette Week reports the jail nearly released 19-year-old Jamaine Oliver a couple weeks ago until a sheriff intervened. The mistake was due to an error in the algorithm that identifies potential candidates for early release to prevent overcrowding once the county jails reach 95-percent capacity. Multnomah County Sheriff's officials say the algorithm mistakenly identified Oliver as a candidate.
