(Portland, OR) -- A man accused of intimidating a Muslim couple in Portland is set to be sentenced for a hate crime next month. Frederick Sorrell pleaded "no contest" in court yesterday and is facing a maximum of 364 days behind bars. Police arrested Sorrell in July after he verbally threatened Jaminah Shannon and Alekzandr Wray, implying he had a gun and telling them to go back to their country. Sorrell tells KATU News he acted out of fear, saying he'd seen hijabis before but had never seen a woman in a burka. Shannon was actually wearing a niqab, which is similar to a burka but doesn't cover the eyes.
