(Seattle, WA) -- A national environmental group is suing the Trump administration in an attempt to protect the southern resident orca population. The National Marine Fisheries Service filed the lawsuit yesterday. The lawsuit says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has failed to act on a petition from 2014 to expand habitat protections to the killer whales' wintertime foraging and migration areas. Those areas include the coasts of Washington, Oregon and California. The southern resident orca population is critically endangered.
