(Portland, OR) -- Another call is going out to use Portland's Wapato Jail as a homeless shelter. The owner of the facility and a Multnomah County Commissioner held a news conference yesterday to promote the idea. The Oregonian reports that owner Jordan Schnitzer and Loretta Smith said it's time to stop tossing the idea around "like a political football" and start helping those without a place to stay. Smith said the old jail is "an opportunity, not an albatross" as she pitched the notion of housing as many as a thousand people there.
