(Portland, OR) -- Students at Portland State University are remembering a Navy veteran who was shot and killed by campus police. Dozens of students ended their first day of the new semester yesterday with a candlelight vigil for Jason Washington outside the campus public safety office. Earlier in the day, students held a march and rally calling on the school to disarm campus police officers. Campus police shot and killed Washington in June while he was trying to break up a fight. Police opened fire on him after he bent over to pick up a gun that had fallen out of his holster. Washington reportedly had a concealed carry permit for the gun.
