Portland Council Rejects Mayor's Protest Restriction Plan

(Portland, OR)  --  City Council is rejecting Mayor Ted Wheeler's plan for new restrictions on protests.  The Oregonian reports that the council members voted yesterday against allowing Wheeler to give himself more powers under certain circumstances.  The measure would have allowed Wheeler to step in if demonstrators had a history of violence or if public safety was warranted.  Wheeler proposed the restrictions following a series of violent protests in the city involving right-wing groups.
