(Portland, OR) -- The Portland Police Bureau is holding a public listening session tonight on hundreds of text messages exchanged between a police lieutenant and the leader of the alt-right group Patriot Prayer. Police Chief Danielle Outlaw called for the listening session, saying that 2019 is Portland's year for resolve against division and fear. The Willamette Week submitted a public records request to obtain the texts between Lieutenant Jeff Niiya and Joey Gibson. The texts show a friendly rapport between the two as Niiya advises Gibson of the positions of counter-protesters at Patriot Prayer rallies. One text exchange appears to show Niiya advising Gibson on how a fellow Patriot Prayer member can evade arrest despite having an active arrest warrant out against him. Tonight's listening session is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Maranatha Church in Northeast Portland.
