Wildlife Officials Anticipate Poor Salmon Runs

(Portland, OR)  --  Wildlife officials say they're expecting poor salmon runs this year.  The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada says spring chinook returns to the Columbia River are expected to be down 14-percent from last year.  Officials say salmon return forecasts for this year are at just fractions of their ten-year averages.  In Washington state, fewer than 30-thousand wild chinook are expected to make their way back to the Puget Sound, where the endangered southern resident orca population relies on them as their primary food source.
