(Newport, OR) -- An Oregon mayor is being identified as the pilot involved in a crash landing in Newport. Authorities say Newport Mayor Dean Sawyer, a long-time license pilot, was flying a Cessna Monday when it experienced mechanical problems. Sawyer landed the plane on a Newport-area beach, just north of the Jetty. Sawyer and a seven-year-old child were taken to a hospital for treatment and released. A third passenger, the child's mother, had to be flown to a Portland hospital with serious injuries.
