Man Pleads Not Guilty To Bias Crime Charges

(Portland, OR)  --  A 58-year-old man is pleading not guilty to bias crime and other charges in connection to the assault of three Latino men as they left a gay club in the Old Town/Chinatown district.  The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office says Robert Oden pleaded not guilty in court yesterday to charges of first-degree bias crime, second-degree bias crime, fourth-degree felony assault and harassment.  Oden is the first person to be charged under Oregon's new bias crime law.  Police say Oden punched the three men several times August 10th outside the nightclub CC Slaughters while yelling at them and using homophobic language.  He then allegedly told them to go back to their country after they managed to escape.
