Oregon State Falls Short Against Stanford; Ducks Back After Bye

(Corvallis, OR)  --  The Beavers staged a fourth-quarter comeback to fall short against Stanford 31-28 at Reser Stadium.  Jet Toner buried a 39 yard field goal with one second remaining to lift the Cardinal to the win.  Jake Lutton threw for 337 yards and a touchdown while Artavis Pierce had 141 yards rushing and two touchdowns.  Isaiah Hodgins had 10 catches for 162 yards and a score in the loss.  State will visit UCLA Saturday.  Meanwhile, after a bye, number-13 Oregon will host Cal Saturday at Autzen.  

Timbers Control Their Own Fate Going Into Final Week of Season

(Kansas City, KS)  --  With the tie, the Timbers moved into sixth place by themselves in the Western Conference.  They have 46 points through 33 matches.  However, they're not out of danger.  The Tims will host San Jose in the final week of the season next Sunday at Providence Park.  FC Dallas is a point behind Portland for the seventh and final playoff spot, while the Earthquakes are just two back.  If the Quakes win and FC Dallas draw or win, the Timbers would be on the outside looking in of the playoffs. 

Mariners Suffer Big Downturn in Attendance

(Seattle, WA)  --  Fewer people in great numbers visited T-Mobile Park this season.  The Mariners drew 16-thousand, eight-hundred-51 in the finale against the Athletics, to finish just short of 1-point-eight million fans in its 81 home games.  Last year, the club drew just a shade over 2.3 million fans, a reduction in more than a half-million fans.  The team finished last in the American League West, 39 games out of first place.  They were 35-and-46 at home. 

Mariners Edge Athletics

(Seattle, WA)  --  Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer as the Mariners edged the Athletics 3-1 in Seattle.  Kyle Lewis drove in the other run on a single.  Reggie McClain pitched two scoreless innings to get the win for the M's, who finish last in the AL West at 68-and-94.  Tanner Roark gave up three runs over five frames to take the loss for the A's, who will host the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL wild card game on Wednesday.

Timbers Earn Tough Draw in Kansas City

(Kansas City, KS)  --  The Timbers salvaged a 2-2 draw after Sporting Kansas City went down to nine men Sunday in Kansas.  Dairon Asprilla put away an 85th minute penalty kick after EIlie Sánchez was sent off a minute before for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.  Sebastian Blanco scored in the 29th minute to give the Tims the early lead.  Brian Fernandez was sent off in the 36th minute in a tie game before Roger Espinoza was sent off in the 38th for Sporting.

Clowney, Seahawks Stifle Cardinals

(Glendale, AZ)  --  Jadeveon Clowney returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown as the Seahawks stifled the Cardinals 27-10 in Arizona.  Russell Wilson finished 22-of-28 for 240 yards and a touchdown.  Chris Carson rushed for 104 yards while C.J. Prosise added a touchdown on the ground late for the Seahawks, who improve to 3-and-1.  Kyler Murray threw for 241 yards and an interception and ran in to score in defeat for the Cardinals.  Larry Fitzgerald recorded his 1,326th career reception to pass Tony Gonzalez and move into second-place all-time behind Jerry Rice.  The Seahawks will return home to host the Rams Thursday.  The 'Hawks are 6-0-and-1 against the Cards at State Farm Stadium.

Timbers Draw, Again, Versus Revolution

(Portland, OR)  --  The Tims will play their penultimate game of the regular season Sunday in Kansas City, Kansas, against Sporting.   They are tied for sixth-place in the West with FC Dallas, but own the tiebreaker.  If the season ended today, both teams would make the playoffs.

Sheffield Seeks First Win Versus Athletics

(Seattle, WA)  --  The final series of the season rolls on today as Justus Sheffield goes for the Mariners.  The rookie southpaw is still looking for his first career win.  The A's will send out Mike Fiers who is 15-and-4.  The right-hander is 20-and-4 in his 42 games with the club. 

King Felix Takes Ball in Possible Final Start For M's

(Seattle, WA)  --  Felix Hernandez gave up three runs in five-and-a-third in his probable final start with the Mariners as the team lost 3-1 at T-Mobile Park.  King Felix fell to 1-and-8, but received a standing ovation after being lifted following 106 pitches in the sixth.  Austin Nola drove in the only run for the M's, who have lost four-straight. 

Seahawks At Cardinals Sunday

(Glendale, AZ)  --  The Seahawks will travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals Sunday.  Seattle is 2-and-1 after losing to the New Orleans Saints last week.  Russell Wilson has thrown for 901 yards and seven touchdowns so far.  Number-one pick Kyler Murray has thrown for 803 yards, four TD's and three interceptions for the Cardinals, who are 0-2-and-1.

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers finally found the back of the net, but squandered away a late 2-nil lead to walk away with just one point against the New England Revolution at Providence Park.  Jeremy Ebobisse scored in the 49th and 81st minute for Portland.  However, Gustavo Bou scored in the 87th minute and Carles Gil converted a penalty seven minutes into stoppage time to earn the 2-2 draw.  The point, however, propels Portland into the six-seed, tied with FC Dallas, but owning the tie-breaker.  The Tims will play their penultimate game of the regular season Sunday in Kansas City, Kansas, against Sporting.

Mariners Avoid Record-Setting No-Hitter, Still Lose

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners avoided being no-hit for the third time this season, but couldn't avoid the loss, falling 3-0 to the Astros at T-Mobile Park.  Zack Greinke threw eight-and-a-third of no hit ball before surrendering a pair of hits.  Austin Nola broke up the no-no with a single to the left-center gap.  Yusei Kikuchi fell to 6-and-11, giving up just two runs over six innings.  The M's have lost three-straight.  No team has ever been no-hit three times in a season.

Timbers Host Revolution Tonight

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers will welcome the Revolution to Providence Park tonight.  Portland is coming off a nil-nil draw with Minnesota United.  The Timbers are fighting for a playoff spot as they're tied for seventh in the West with San Jose, which owns the secondary tie-breaker of goals scored over the Tims.  Dallas checks in with 45 points.

Blazers' Media Day Monday

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Trail Blazers will host their Media Day on Monday.  The Blazers will come together officially as a team for the first time this season to speak with the press.  Portland is celebrating its 50th season and looks to build on a trip to the Western Conference finals last season.  The first preseason game will be October 8th against Denver at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the home venue for the Blazers from 1970-through-1995.

Mariners Shutout By Cole, Astros

(Seattle, WA)  --  Gerrit Cole pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and struck out 14 as the Astros blanked the Mariners 3-0 in Seattle.  The M's only managed four hits, including a double by Dee Gordon.  Tommy Milone gave up all three runs over four-and-a-third to take the loss for the M's, who have dropped three of their last four.  The two-game series concludes tonight.

M's Host A's To Close Out Season

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners will host the Oakland Athletics starting tomorrow to close out the season.  Seattle is currently 66-and-91.  Felix Hernandez, Justus Sheffield, Marco Gonzales and Justin Dunn will get the final starts for the M's.

College Football Rankings

We kick things off with College Football and the week-5 AP and Coaches rankings where virtually no change in the top-5, but plenty of movement in the top-20.

 

Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State the top-5. Then, it’s Oklahoma, Auburn, then Wisconsin moves up 5-spots to #8, followed by Florida, and Notre Dame who drops three notches to 10th.

 

With Oregon’s road win over Stanford Saturday, the Ducks move up 3-spots to #13. Cal, who is unbeaten and Oregon’s next opponent on October 5th made the biggest jump, moving up 8-spots to #15.

 

Boise State is 16th, Washington 17th, Utah drops from 10th to 19th and Washington State and Arizona State, who both lost over the weekend tumble out of the top-25.

On the prep volleyball docket tonight, Bend greets Summit. Mt. View travels to West Salem. Crook County hosts Hood River. Redmond has the home floor with rival Ridgeview. La Pine hosts Creswell, and Trinity Lutheran is at Triad.

Rapinoe Named FIFA Player of the Year

(Milan, Italy)  --  United States star and former Portland State standout Megan Rapinoe is FIFA's best female soccer player.  The 34-year-old Rapinoe captained the US Women's Team to a World Cup championship in France, winning the Golden Ball for best player and the Golden Boot for most goals.  She beat out Alex Morgan and English forward Lucy Bronze for the FIFA award.  In other news, Barcelona's women's side is interested in acquiring the Reign FC midfielder.  Rapinoe played abroad for the 2013-14 season with Lyon.

M's Go Home For Final Homestand of Season

(Seattle, WA)  --  After a day off yesterday, the Mariners will are back to home to host their final homestand of the season, starting with the Astros tonight.  Justin Dunn will start for the M's against Cy Young contender Gerrit Cole.  Yusei Kikuchi will start the second game of the series tomorrow. 

Blazers' Media Day Monday

(Portland, OR)  --  The Portland Trail Blazers will host their annual Media Day on Monday.  The Blazers will come together officially as a team for the first time this season to speak with the press.  Portland is celebrating the 50th season in team history and looks to build on a trip to the Western Conference finals last season.  Training camp tips off a week from today.

King Felix Scheduled to Make Final Start Thursday

(Seattle, WA)  --  Felix Hernandez is scheduled to make possibly his last start as a Mariner in Seattle Thursday night.  After two games against the Astros, the M's will welcome the A's to town for four-games to round out the schedule.  King Felix is scheduled to face Mike Fiers.  Hernandez, whose 1-and-7 with a 6.51 ERA, has battled injuries the last few years and is in the final year of his contract.  He's the franchise's leader in wins, strike outs, innings pitched, and is tied for ERA. 

Oregon Makes Easy Work of Stanford

(Stanford, CA)  --   Justin Herbert picked apart the Stanford defense as number-13 Oregon beat the Cardinal 21-6 in northern California Saturday.  Herbert threw for 259 yards and three scores while Jacob Breeland had five catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns.  CJ Verdell had 82 yards rushing on 24 carries in the win.  After a bye week this week, the Ducks will host number-16 Cal at Autzen Stadium October Fifth.  The Cardinal will travel north to Corvallis to face the Beavers Saturday. 

Seahawks Fall To Saints

(Seattle, WA)  --  Russell Wilson threw for 406 yards and two touchdowns but it wasn't enough as the Seahawks fell to the Drew Bress-less Saints 33-27 at CenturyLink Field.  Seattle outscored New Orleans 20-6 in the fourth quarter with Wilson running in to score twice and Will Dissly catching a touchdown pass as time expired.  Tyler Lockett caught the other scoring pass.  The Seahawks drop to 2-and-1.  They'll travel to Arizona to face the Cardinals Sunday.

Timbers Shut Out For Third-Straight Match, Earn Draw

(Portland, OR)  --  Despite forcing the Minnesota United keeper to make 12 saves, the Timbers earned a nil-nil draw against the Loons Sunday at Providence Park.  It's the third-straight match Portland has been shut out.  A potential penalty was denied after an apparent handball in the box in the 87th minute.  The Tims haven't won since September 7th and are tied for the seventh and final playoff spot in the West with San Jose. 

M's Go Home For Final Homestand of Season

(Seattle, WA)  --  After a day off, the Mariners will head back to the Pacific Northwest to host their final homestand of the season against the Astros.  Justin Dunn will start for the M's against Cy Young contender Gerrit Cole.  Yusei Kikuchi will start the second game of the series Wednesday. 

Davis' Homer Lifts Orioles Past Mariners

(Baltimore, MD)  --  Chris Davis homered in the seventh inning to lift the Orioles to a 2-1 win over the Mariners at Camden Yards.  Renato Nunez had an RBI double in the first to tie the game.  John Means leveled his record at 11-and-11, giving up one run on seven hits over seven frames.  Baltimore took two-of-three in the series.  J.P. Crawford drove in the lone run for the M's with an RBI single in the top of the first.  Marco Gonzalez fell to 16-and-12, despite giving up just two runs on three hits over seven. 

Oregon State Football Resumes Action Next Saturday

(Corvallis, OR)  --  The Beavers are off this weekend.  Oregon State will resume action when they host Stanford next Saturday.  The Beavers are 1-and-2 on the season.

Number-17 Oregon At Stanford Tomorrow

(Stanford, CA)  --  Number-17 Oregon is looking to pick up a crucial Pac-12 victory on the road tomorrow.  The Ducks will visit the Stanford Cardinal.  It's the first conference game of the season for Oregon, which is 2-and-1.

Mariners Clip Pirates In 11 Innings

(Pittsburgh, PA)  --  Austin Nola grounded into a double play in the 11th inning but it was enough to plate the go-ahead run as the Mariners clipped the Pirates 6-5 in Pittsburgh.  Nola also tied the game in the seventh inning with a single.  Shed Long drove in a pair of runs for Seattle.  Brandon Brennan got the win for the Mariners.  Seattle improves to 65-and-88 on the season and will visit the Orioles tonight.

Timbers Host Minnesota United Sunday

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers' fight for a playoff spot continues Sunday.  Portland will host Minnesota United.  The Timbers are eighth in the Western Conference with 43 points.  Portland is one point back of Dallas and San Jose for the final playoff spots in the Western Conference.

Seahawks Continue Prep For Saints

(Renton, WA)  --  The Seahawks are hard at work as they get ready to host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.  Seattle won't have to face quarterback Drew Brees, who suffered a thumb injury in a loss to the Rams this past Sunday.  The Seahawks are 2-and-0 after close wins over the Bengals at home and the Steelers on the road.

Report: Seahawks Look Into Jalen Ramsey

(Renton, WA)  --  According to ESPN, the Seahawks have looked into Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey.  Multiple suitors have reportedly inquired into the availability of the cornerback.  The Pro Bowl cornerback has reportedly requested a trade after recent struggles in Jacksonville and a sideline issue with head coach Doug Marrone.

Number-17 Oregon Visits Stanford Saturday

(Stanford, CA)  --  Number-17 Oregon will look to kick off Pac-12 play with a win on Saturday.  The Ducks will visit Stanford.  Oregon is 2-and-1 on the season after winning two in a row following a season-opening loss to Auburn.

Oregon State Off This Weekend

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Oregon State will be getting the weekend off.  The Beavers will return to action when they host Stanford next Saturday.  Oregon State got its first win defeating Cal Poly 45-7 this past Saturday.

Timbers Blanked By Red Bulls

(Portland, OR)  --  The Timbers failed to score a goal as they were blanked 2-0 by the New York Red Bulls at home.  Portland remains at 43 points.  The Timbers are eighth in the Western Conference and a point back of FC Dallas for the final playoff spot.

Seahawks Prep For Saints

(Renton, WA)  --  The Seahawks are hard at work as they get ready for a home tilt with the Saints on Sunday.  Seattle is off to a 2-and-0 start on the season with wins over the Bengals and Steelers.  New Orleans will be without quarterback Drew Brees on Sunday.

Seahawks' Injury Report

(Renton, WA)  --  The latest injury report is out for the Seahawks.  Among those that didn't practice was center Ethan Pocic with a neck issue and tackle D.J. Fluker, who is battling an ankle injury.  Tackle Duane Brown was limited but it was not injury related.  Tyler Lockett did not practice but it was not injury related as well.

Nike Picks Up Emmy

(Eugene, OR)  --  Nike can add an Emmy award to its trophy case, thanks to its partnership with Wieden and Kennedy and Colin Kaepernick.  Last year, the company debuted their "Dream Crazy" commercial with the quarterback-turned-activist as part of the company's 30th anniversary of the "Just Do It" campaign.  The video included Serena Williams and LeBron James and was narrated by Kaepernick.

Timbers Face Red Bulls Tonight

(Portland, OR)  --  The push for the playoffs continues tonight as the Timbers welcome the Red Bulls to Providence Park.  It'll be the club's seventh-straight home game after playing the majority of the first half of the season on the road following renovations to the stadium.  The Tims are currently seventh in the West.  With a win, however, they can leap over San Jose and the LA Galaxy and be tied for fourth.  Portland will play four of their last five at home.

Mariners Class With Pirates Again Tonight

(Pittsburgh, PA)  --  The Mariners will look to continue their hot play tonight when they take on the Pirates in Pittsburgh.  Justin Dunn will take the ball for Scott Servais' club.  He made his first start September 12th in a loss against the Reds at home.  The Pirates will counter with Dario Agrazal.  The right-hander is 4-and-4 with a 4.91 ERA.  He's earned two wins in his last four starts with the club winning three of those.

Gonzales Dazzles as Mariners Top Pirates

(Pittsburgh, PA)  --  Marco Gonzales threw seven shutout innings as the Mariners beat the Pirates 6-0 in Pittsburgh.  Gonzales picked up his 16th win of the year.  The M's hit three home runs behind back-to-back jobs by Omar Narvaez and Austin Nola, then a blast by Shed Long the next inning.  Seattle's won three-straight and five-of-seven. 

Carroll Asks League To Look Over Hit On Wilson

(Renton, WA)  --  Pete Carroll is asking the league to watch film on the helmet-to-helmet hit Russell Wilson took by the Steelers' Bud Dupree.  The collision occurred during the fourth quarter of Sunday's win in Pittsburgh.  Dupree was not penalized on the play, but could still receive a fine.  The Seahawks will be back home this weekend when they host the Drew Brees-less Saints.

McCormick to Miss Second Straight Season With Injury

(Eugene, OR)  --  Cam McCormick is going to miss his second-straight season for the Ducks.  He suffered an ankle injury during the offseason and will opt for rest to heal the injury.  The tight end broke his leg in the 2018 opener against Bowling Green.  He did, however, go through pregame warmups in full uniform Saturday before the Montana win.  Oregon will visit Stanford Saturday.

Carroll Expects Ansah To Play Sunday

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Seahawks' big free-agent addition is expected to debut this weekend. Head coach Pete Carroll said he expects Ziggy Ansah to be ready to go against the Saints.  The Pro Bowl defensive end had offseason shoulder surgery and missed the first two games.  The 'Hawks will be home Sunday against New Orleans, which will be without Drew Brees, who will miss the next six weeks following surgery on his thumb. 

Key Arena Renovations Expected To Be Finished On Time

(Seattle, WA)  --  The opening of the new and improved Key Arena is on track to open in the summer of 2021, in time for the new NHL team to begin play in October.  The building has been completely gutted in advance of a 930-million-dollar renovation.  For now, the 44-million-pound roof is being held up by a series of temporary steel support beams.  Aside from the hockey season, the renovation needs to be ready for the June start to the Seattle Storm season and the NHL Draft.

Mariners Travel to Pittsburgh to Face Pirates Tonight

(Pittsburgh, PA)  --  After the off day today, the Mariners will travel across the country to face the Pirates in Pittsburgh in the first of a three-game series tonight.  Marco Gonzales will take the ball for Scott Servais' club.  The southpaw is 15-and-11 with a 4.30 ERA and won his last start.  Mitch Keller will take the ball for the Bucs in search of his second win for the season and career.  He's 1-and-4 with an 8.29 ERA in nine starts this year.  Justin Dunn and Yusei Kikuchi are scheduled to start the final two games of the series for the M's. 

Sounders Beat Up On Red Bulls

(Seattle, WA)  --  Sounds supporters are unifying against the league's ban on political signs.  The majority of the Brougham End supporters group walked out at the beginning of the second half in an act of unity with Emerald City Supporters.  The Emerald City leader was removed at halftime for displaying an Iron Front flag during the first half.  The league has determined the anti-fascism flag to be political display, which the MLS banned prior to the season.  Groups from multiple teams will meet with the league in Las Vegas Thursday to discuss the ban.

Ducks Make Easy Work Of Montana

(Eugene, OR)  --  Justin Herbert threw for five touchdowns as Oregon crushed Montana 35-3 at Autzen Stadium.  The quarterback threw for 316 yards on 30-for-42, while Johnny Johnson the Third had eight catches for 7 yards and two scores.  Travis Dye finished with 101 yards on the ground over 17 rushes.  The Ducks are 2-and-1 will visit Stanford in Northern California Saturday afternoon.

High School Football

Scoreboard rewind under the Friday Night Lights. Mt. View smashed Sandy, 48-13. Summit battled on the road but came up short losing at Grants Pass, 12-7. The Cougars play at Grants Pass this week. 

Elsewhere. West Salem throttled Bend, 44-19. Redmond lost a close game at Eagle Point, 29-27. South Eugene ran past Ridgeview, 34-12. Crook County blanked Cottage Grove, 39-zip. Valley Catholic of Beaverton edged Sisters, 22-19. 

In the lower levels, La Pine shut down Madras, 22-3. Culver slipped by Rogue River, 13-12. Gilchrist edged Crow, 27-24 and Butte Falls blew out North Lake, 68-to-nothing.
 

Beavers Hammer Cal Poly

(Corvallis, OR)  --  Jake Luton threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns as Oregon State hammered Cal Poly 45-7 at Reser Stadium.  BJ Baylor had 101 yards and a score on seven carries, while Artavis Pierce had 90 yards rushing on 12 carries.  Champ Flemings had five catches for 142 yards and two scores while Isaiah Hodgins found the end zone twice, catching seven passes for 81 yards.  The 1-and-2 Beavers will be off this weekeend before hosting Stanford in Corvallis September 28th. 

Timbers Stumble at Home

(Portland, OR)  -- The Timbers lost 1-nil to DC United on an own goal at Providence Park Sunday.  Bill Tuiloma slid to try and clear the ball and knocked it into his own net in the 25th minute.  Diego Valeri hit the woodwork in the 16th minute on a header off a cross that would've given Portland the lead.  Despite the loss, the Tims are in seventh place in the West with 43 points through 29 matches.  They have at least one game in hand on every team in the conference.  Portland will host the Red Bulls Wednesday night. 

Wilson's Big Game Lifts Seahawks Over Steelers

(Pittsburgh, PA)  --  Russell Wilson connected with DK Metcalf for a 28-yard touchdown pass to push the Seahawks to a 28-26 win over the Steelers in Pittsburgh.  Wilson finished with 300 yards passing and three touchdowns.  Rashaad Penny had 62 yards rushing and a touchdown while Chris Carson added 61.  Tyler Lockett had 10 catches for 79 yards in the win for Seattle, whose now 2-and-0.  Ben Roethlisberger left in the first half after hurting his right elbow on a non-contact injury.  Mason Rudolph threw for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Vance McDonald in relief.  James Connor had 33 yards rushing and a touchdown.  The Steelers are 0-and-2 for the first time since 2013. 

M's Outlast White Sox On Bases-Loaded Walk

(Seattle, WA)  --  Tom Murphy walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Mariners outlasted the White Sox 11-10 at T-Mobile Park.  The M's tied the game at 10 with five in the eighth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Kyle Lewis.  Mallex Smith singled in the tying run for Seattle, which took the final two in the three-game series. 

Mariners Travel to Pittsburgh to Face Pirates Tomorrow

(Pittsburgh, PA)  --  After winning back-to-back series, a day off is probably the last thing the Mariners want.  After the off day today, they'll travel across the country to face the Pirates in Pittsburgh in the first of a three-game series tomorrow.  Marco Gonzales will take the ball Tuesday for Scott Servais' club.  The southpaw is 15-and-11 with a 4.30 ERA and won his last start.  Mitch Keller will take the ball for the Bucs in search of his second win for the season and career.  He's 1-and-4 with an 8.29 ERA in nine starts this year.  Justin Dunn and Yusei Kikuchi are scheduled to start the final two games of the series for the M's. 

Storm's Season Over After Falling to Sparks

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  The Storm's long season is over.  They lost 92-69 to the Sparks in Los Angeles in the single-game second round of the WNBA's Western Conference Playoffs.  Natasha Howard scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Mercedes Russell had 10 points and eight boards.  Seattle was outscored 25-11 in the final period.  Chelsea Gray had 21 points and eight assists and Candace Parker added 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Derek Fisher's LA squad.  The Storm played the entire season without Miss MVP of Everything Brianna Stewart and veteran point guard Sue Bird.  Both are expected back next season.

(Portland, OR)  --  It won't be long before basketball season takes over Portland again.  The Trail Blazers will be holding their annual fan fest on October 6th at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.  They open the preseason two days later at home against the Denver Nuggets.

(Seattle, WA)  --  Despite a passed ball on the would-be third out in the top of ninth, the Mariners took down the Reds 5-3 at home.  Kyle Lewis hit a three-run, go-ahead home run in the seventh inning to break up a no-hitter by Reds pitcher Sonny Gray.  Seattle improves to 60-and-86 on the season.  The two teams will close out the series tonight.

Storm Eliminate Lynx, Advance In Playoffs

(Seattle, WA)  --  Jordin Canada scored 26 points as the Storm defeated the Lynx 84-74 to in a single-elimination game in the WNBA Playoffs.  Jewell Loyd added 22 points.  The Storm advance to face the Los Angeles Sparks on the road on Sunday in a single-elimination game.

US Men Earn Drawn Against Uruguay

(St. Louis, MO)  --  The United States earned a 1-1 draw against Uruguay in a friendly in St. Louis.  Jordan Morris fed a cross in off his chest in the 79th minute to tie the game.  Uruguayan forward and LAFC designated player Brian Rodriguez buried a shot behind US keeper Brad Guzan in the 50th minute with a left-footed blast inside the box.  The US men's national team will reunite a month from today to face Cuba in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Gonzales Takes Ball In Hopes Of Making It Two-Straight Wins

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Mariners will look to make it two in-a-row tonight as they face the Reds at home.  Marco Gonzales will take the ball for Scott Servais' club.  The southpaw is 14-and-11 with a 4.60 ERA and 9-and-4 since June 7th.  He'll be opposed by Sonny Gray, who was an All-Star this season.  The righty is 10-and-6 with a 2.75 ERA.

Seager's Late Homer Lifts Mariners Over Reds

(Seattle, WA)  --  Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer in the eighth to lift the Mariners to a 4-3 win over the Reds at T-Mobile Park.  Kyle Lewis, who was making his major league debut, homered in his second at-bat.  Dylan Moore hit a solo shot in the sixth.  Justus Sheffield gave up just one run on seven hits over six, but did not factor into the decision.  Dan Altavilla [[ all-tuh-VIL-uh ]] picked up the win in relief and Aaron Bass nailed down his third save of the year.  The win snapped the M's six-game losing streak.

Sentencing For Seahawk Delayed

(Undated)  --  The sentencing for Seahawk Mychal Kendricks has been pushed back to November 21st.  The former linebacker was convicted of insider trading.  The new date is three days before the Hawks play the Eagles in Philadelphia, with whom he played for when he was charged with the crime.  It is unknown if he'll face any prison time, but the maximum penalty for his crimes would be around 37 months in prison.

Storm's Howard Named Natasha Defensive MVP

(Everett, WA)  --  Natasha Howard is the WNBA's 2019 Defensive MVP.  She led the league with 74 steals while ranking third in blocks with 1.7 per game and sixth in rebounds with 8.6 per game.  She knocks off two-time defending Defensive MVP Alana Beard.  She will receive her award before the Storm take on the Minnesota Lynx tonight in a playoff elimination game.  Both teams finished the season at 18-and-16.

Seahawks Looked At Antonio Brown Once He Hit Free Agency

(Seattle, WA)  -- Head coach Pete Carroll admitted Monday that the team did take a look into Antonio Brown once he was released by the Raiders Saturday. He stressed that he and general manager John Schneider always talk about every potential move that comes up.  Without Brown, though, rookie DK Metcalf had 89 yards receiving to lead the way.  The Seahawks will be in Pittsburgh to face the Steelers this Sunday.
 

Storm Host Elimination Game Tonight

(Everett, WA)  --  The Storm will play in an elimination game tonight when they host the Minnesota Lynx in Everett.  Both teams finished the season at 18-and-16.  Seattle finished the season on a high-note, beating the Wings on Sunday and winning three-of-four.  Minnesota had won five-straight before falling to the LA Sparks Sunday.

Oregon Blows Out Nevada, Moves Up In Rankings

(Eugene, OR)  --  Justin Herbert threw for 310 yards and five touchdowns as Oregon demolished Nevada 77-6 at home on Saturday.  Jacob Breeland caught four passes for 112 yards.  The Ducks improved to 1-and-1 and moves up to number-17 in the Coaches Poll.  The Ducks will host Montana on Saturday.

(Portland, OR)  --  Brian Fernandez scored in stoppage time as the Timbers topped Sporting KC 2-1 at home.  The Timbers improve to 43 points and move into the sixth spot in the west.  The Timbers will host D.C. United on Sunday.

(Honolulu, HI)  --  Jake Luton threw for 169 yards and a touchdown but Oregon State fell 31-28 to Hawaii in Honolulu on Saturday.  Jermar Jefferson rushed for 183 yards and a touchdown.  The Beavers fall to 0-and-2.  Oregon State will host Cal Poly on Saturday.

(Arlington, TX)  --  Natasha Howard scored 22 points as the Storm defeated the Wings 78-64 in Arlington.  Seattle finishes the regular season 18-and-16.  The Storm will host the Minnesota Lynx in a single-elimination game on Wednesday.

Mariners Demolished By Astros

(Houston, TX)  --  Gerrit Cole struck out 15 over eight innings and Yordan Alvarez drove in six runs as the Astros demolished the Mariners 21-1 in Houston.   Shed Long had the M's only hit, a solo homer in the fourth.  Felix Hernandez gave up 11 runs in two-plus innings to take the loss.  Seattle falls to 58-and-86.  The Mariners will host the Reds tomorrow.

Seahawks Nip Bengals

(Seattle, WA)  --  Tyler Lockett hauled in a 44-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson at the start of the fourth quarter as the Seahawks edged by the Bengals 21-20 in Seattle.  It was Lockett's only reception of the day.  Chris Carson rushed for a score and also caught a touchdown for Seattle.  Russell Wilson threw for 196 yards and two TD's in the win.  Rookie DK Metcalf led Seattle in receiving with 89 yards.  The Seahawks improve to 1-and-0 and will visit the Steelers on Sunday.

Former Mt. View High School quarterback Jacob Hollister has been signed to the practice squad of the Seahawks after being waived at the end of the preseason in which the 4-year NFL veteran, and Super Bowl champion former New England Patriot played in every preseason game with Seattle.

US Women Top Portugal in Friendly

(St. Paul, MN)  --  Carli Lloyd scored twice as the United States' Women's National Team cruised to a 3-nil victory over Portugal in St. Paul, Minnesota. 
Portland Thorns' midfielder Lindsey Horan netted a header in the 83rd minute to seal the game.  The win was Jill Ellis' 105th as head of the team, tying her with Tony DiCicco, who ran the team from 1994 to 99.  At 105-7-and-18, she has just two more matches as head coach before stepping down in October.  The US beat Portugal 4-0 Thursday night in Philadelphia.

(Chicago, IL)  --  In injury news, catcher Omar Narvaez was out of the starting lineup for the second straight day with back spasms.  Shortstop J.P. Crawford met with doctors before missing his fourth consecutive game with right hamstring tightness.  Outfielder Mitch Haniger says he wants to play again this season, but manager Scott Servais said his lower back is still bothering him. Haniger hurt his back while rehabbing from a ruptured testicle.

Castellanos Power Cubs Past Mariners

(Chicago, IL)  --  Nick Castellanos went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBI as the Cubs beat the Mariners 6-1 at Wrigley Field.  Dee Gordon broke the shutout, scoring on a Daniel Vogelbach eighth-inning single.  Felix Hernandez took the loss, his fifth of the year, after giving up two runs over three innings, but he had thrown 70 pitches.  The M's have lost two-straight and four-of-five. 

US Men To Take on Mexico Friday

(East Rutherford, NJ)  --  The United States Mens National Team will play Mexico Friday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  The two teams have met 69 times with Mexico leading the series with 35 wins.  The US will face Uruguay next Tuesday in St. Louis.

NHL Club Hires Assistant GM

(Seattle, WA)  --  The artist-yet-to-be-named NHL franchise has hired Ricky Olczyk as the assistant general manager to Ron Francis.  Olczyk is the younger brother of Francis' former Penguins teammate and NBC broadcaster Eddie Olczyk.  The Brown and Cornell graduate spent six seasons as the assistant GM with the Oilers.

Cubs Answer With Huge Seventh To Beat M's

(Chicago, IL)  --  A five-run seventh inning and a Seattle error led the Cubs to a 5-1 win over the Mariners at Wrigley Field.  The M's scored first as Dee Gordon hit an RBI double in the fifth.  Matt Wisler took the loss for Seattle, which is three losses away from playoff elimination.  Starter Justus Sheffield threw five shutout innings, giving up just five hits and striking out seven, but earned a no-decision.

Duane Brown Sold Clowney On Coming to Seattle, Joining Seahawks

(Renton, WA)  --  The deciding factor in Jadeveon Clowney coming to Seattle turns out to have been Duane Brown.  The offensive tackle had spent his entire career in Houston before joining the Seahawks in 2017.  The four-time Pro Bowler sold the prized defensive end on the city and the club.  Head coach Pete Carroll said Clowney is in line to play Sunday's opener against the Bengals at CenturyLink Field.
