(Portland, OR) -- A man is facing a year in prison after stealing a catalytic converter from a vehicle while it was parked at a library late last year. A judge sentenced 35-year-old Dereck Conant yesterday after he pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a motor vehicle for the incident in November. The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office says it's the first time in Oregon someone has been sentenced on the charge for stealing a catalytic converter. Court records say the victim was parked at a Multnomah County Library branch when Conant approached the vehicle and used a jack to lift the vehicle up and steal the converter.
