UO Extending Lanning, Seahawks Camp-No Rookie Witherspoon, Timbers Lose

College Football:

Officials at the University of Colorado are reportedly talking about a return to the Big 12 conference. Reports say meetings were held yesterday and are scheduled today (Th) to discuss a hasty exit from the Pac 12 for the conference they left back in 2010. Leaders for the Big 12 schools have voted to accept Colorado’s application to the conference should one be submitted. There has also been talk of the Big 12 eyeing Arizona and Arizona State for expansion possibilities. USC and UCLA are already going to the Big 10 next season.

A committee for the University of Oregon’s board of trustees meets this morning at 10 to consider a contract extension for Dan Lanning. The 2nd year head Football coach is currently signed through 2027.

NFL:

Seattle Seahawks training camp did not have number 5 overall draft pick Devon Witherspoon participate on day one. The Cornerback is the only player from the 2023 draft to not have a contract. Head coach Pete Carrol isn’t worried, telling a post practice press conference he thought the rookie would be in camp soon.

MLB:

Seattle held on to beat Minnesota 8 to 7 yesterday. Julio Rodriguez homered. The Mariners head to Phoenix to take on the Diamondbacks next. Game 1 of the 3 game series is tomorrow.

San Francisco beat Oakland 8 to 3 last night to get the two-game sweep. JD Davis hit a 2-run homer. The Giants move into second place by themselves, 3 games behind the Dodgers. The homestand continues tomorrow (Fr) against Boston.

Soccer:

The Timbers lost to Tigres last night 2 to1 in the Leagues Cup group match Portland had only 10 players in the second half as Evander was sent off with two yellow cards just before halftime. The Timbers will likely still move on to the knockout stage of the inaugural tournament thanks to goal differential in their group. Tigres will play San Jose Saturday in the final match of group play.

Local:

The Elks lost to Walla Walla 7 to 2 last night. Bend again matched the Sweets in hit total with 6, but couldn’t plate more runs. The Elks will try to snap their losing streak and salvage the series tonight. First pitch is at 6:35.

Bend’s Pine Nursery Courts are packed with Pickleball players for the Pacific Northwest Classic through Sunday.
