Dog Flu Comes to Oregon

BEND, OR -- Dog flu has now spread to 40 states, including Oregon. A case has been confirmed in the Portland area, with more tests pending. Recently, some local dogs have developed coughs. Local veterinarians are not sure whether these are cases of Kennel Cough or dog flu, as the symptoms are similar.

Dog owner Stephanie Humphrey tells KBND her 9-month-old yellow lab, Lincoln, got sick earlier this week. "Monday night, in the middle of the night, I woke up to him wheezing and coughing and it went all night long. From 3:00 to 7:00 a.m. the coughing was so bad he was throwing up." Her vet has not said it's dog flu, but the puppy is being monitored.

Humphrey warns other dog owners to be on the lookout. "If you see any symptoms -- start to cough, gagging -- even if you've had them vaccinated against Kennel Cough, check it out because you don't know if it's Kennel Cough or something else." Dog flu is often transmitted between dogs in group settings like dog parks, kennels and shelters. Kennel Cough, or Bordatella, is also often spread at dog parks.
