Des Co Commissioners Weigh In on Historic Canal Nomination

BEND, OR -- The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners has weighed in on whether or not the Ward Road to Gosney Road segment of the Central Oregon Canal should be listed as an Historic District.

Commissioners Tammy Baney, Tony DeBone, and Phil Richardson all recommended against listing the canal section as an historic district in a letter written to the Oregon State Historic Preservation office yesterday.

The reasons they listed against recommendation included their belief that the segment in question lacked historic significance, that the segment had not been nominated previously by COID, and that naming too many stretches of the canal as historic portions would degrade the District's ability to maintain water flow in the event of a break or leak.

The Deschutes County Historic Landmarks Society also recommended against the National Register Listing.

The Oregon State Advisory Committee On Historic Preservation will have a meeting Friday during which they will hear the matter and render a decision.
