Accused Killer May Strike Plea Deal

BEND, OR -- A plea deal may be in the works for Edwin Lara, accused of killing Kaylee Sawyer in July 2016 when he was working as a security guard at Central Oregon Community College. According to a Facebook post from Sawyer’s mother, Lara has agreed to plead guilty to aggravated murder in exchange for a “true life” sentence, without the possibility of parole.

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel had planned to seek the death penalty. He was unavailable for comment, Wednesday, and lawyers connected to the case are under a gag order imposed by the judge

Court records indicate Lara will appear for a Change of Plea hearing, January 22. His murder trial had been scheduled to begin in October.
