Rdm Survey Measures Impact of Childcare Shortage

REDMOND, OR -- A survey of Redmond residents and businesses aims to identify the full impact of a daycare shortage in the city. Erin Pullen, with NeighborImpact, says a lack of appropriate child care is reaching crisis proportions, "We're only meeting the need in Redmond at 29%. There's only 29 spots per 100 kids. So, when you fall under 30% of supply for childcare, it's called a Childcare Desert." She adds, "[There are] Approximately 2,435 kids in Redmond between the ages of zero and five, and there are only 706 available childcare slots, that are provided by 50 childcare providers."

Pullen says the information gathered in the community survey will be used to help the Redmond Chamber Child Care Task Force find solutions, much like a similar survey completed in Bend, in 2018, "Our end goals is going to be that we increase child care in Redmond, and in all three counties in Central Oregon," Pullen tells KBND News. She says the Bend survey led to some solutions that are now being implemented to help ease that city's shortage.

The survey is available to parents, employees, and employers through May 31. Click HERE to access the survey. It's conducted by REDI, the Redmond Chamber and NeighborImpact.
