Sheriff Nelson Says Search & Rescue Saved Man's Life At Smith Rock

SMITH ROCK, OR -- The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team spent a recent Friday afternoon and evening rescuing an injured Climber from Smith Rock. Sheriff Shane Nelson says the steep, rocky terrain where the man fell was not in an area most climbers go to. The rescue took almost 9-hours. The climber did survive the ordeal. Nelson says he tells his deputies and others that recreating outdoors carries an inherent risk. He urges people who head outdoors to take steps to protect themselves. For example, have a map and a compass, a charged cellphone and tell friends or relatives where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
