BEND, OR -- Very cold weather has led to the City of Bend to declare a weather emergency which allows the use of alternative shelters. Fire Marshall Larry Medina says alternative shelters need to be inspected before they can offer overnight lodging. He says they look at areas where people will sleep and make sure there are working smoke or fire alarms. Medina says if there are individuals, non-profits, churches or businesses that may be able provide temporary shelter for people, call the Bend Fire Department for an inspection.
