Central Oregon's Council on Aging anticipates serving more than 500 seniors during 6 upcoming seasonal lunches across Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook counties. Executive Director Susan Rotella says the events are much more than just a meal. They provide comraderie, a sense of community and holiday cheer for seniors who many not have family in the area. Close to 1/5 of all Central Oregon residents are seniors over 60 and that number will climb to 1/3 by 2050. Rotella says the next generation will have to face new challenges as the demographics shift in Central Oregon. Rising costs for senior services like healthcare, housing and assisted living facilities presents new challenges as the population ages.
The lunches include seasonal fare and decor, music, raffles and local guest speakers. They are free for anyone over 60 and a small fee is required for younger guests. You can attend or volunteer at any of the upcoming lunches:
La Pine: Nov. 21 at La Pine Senior Center, 16450 Victory Way
Bend: Dec. 5 at the Council On Aging Community Dining Hall, 1036 ND 5th St., Bend
