Wilderness Fee Permit Prices Drop After Public Complaints

BEND, OR -- The Deschutes National Forest will implement new limited entry permits for day and overnight use of three popular wilderness areas beginning in May. However the fees won’t be as high as first announced last year. The permits will be required for the Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington and Three Sisters Wilderness Areas. The day permit will cost 1-dollar and the overnight permit will be 6-dollars, That’s a drop of 4-to-11-dollars per person, per day for permits following widespread negative public reaction. The goal of the permit system is to reduce overcrowding and environmental damage to the backcountry. Permits will be required from late May to late September.
