Joint Homelessness Office

The City of Bend and Deschutes County are exploring a joint homelessness office. Nothing was finalized at a meeting yesterday, but the two agencies agreed to move forward with the idea. In general, the city deals with land use and housing, while the county works with public health and mental health services. At the meeting, Bend Mayor Sally Russell said that throwing money at the homelessness crisis won’t work and both the city and county need to be strategic. The Emergency Homelessness Task Force reports that on any given night in Central Oregon, 1,000 people—including families with children—experience homelessness.
