MLB:
San Francisco used a 9-run 4th inning to beat the Angels 13 to 6 yesterday, avoiding the sweep. Jorge Soler had a 3-run homer in the big inning. 29-year-old rookie Spencer Bivens picked up his first career win in the effort. He was called up from AAA Sacramento yesterday morning after regular starter Kyle Harrison got hurt in the weight room Saturday. Another injury for the Giants snake-bit season. Now they’re in Chicago to start a six-game road trip beginning with a series against the Cubs. First pitch is today at 5:05.
Seattle shutout Texas 5 to nothing yesterday. Pitcher Logan Gilbert got nine strikeouts and gave up two hits over 8 innings. Rookie Tyler Locklear hit a solo home run, his second since being called up to fill in for the injured Ty France. The Ms are 12 games over .500, winning their last seven of eight, and nine straight home series. They now have an 8 and a half game lead over the Rangers after the sweep. A long road trip is ahead for the Mariners starting in Cleveland tomorrow. [First pitch tonight is at 3:40.]
NFL:
Seattle finished its mandatory minicamp with two second-year players, Wide Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and DB Devon Witherspoon both giving high marks to the team’s progress installing new offensive and defensive systems. Coach Mike Macdonald called Smith-Njigba a massive part of the offense. Maybe most importantly Macdonald said tackle Abraham Lucas is making good progress coming back from injury and should be ready to practice when training camp starts.
Soccer:
The Portland Thorns played a scoreless draw with Seattle Reign yesterday afternoon. Their second tie of the season knocks the Thorns back to 5th place in the NWSL standings.
Local:
The Elks got a 1 to 0 10 inning victory to stop the Portland Pickles from getting the sweep. They move up to 8 and 7 on the season heading on the road at Walla Walla tomorrow night.
