NBA:
Draft day did see some shuffling of Portland’s roster. Connecticut’s Donovan Clingan was taken with the 7th pick. A few hours before the draft, the Blazers traded guard Malcolm Brogdon and the 14th pick where they selected guard Carlton Carrington to Washington for wing Deni Avdija. The Wizards will also get Portland’s 2029 first round pick. Avdija, from Israel, was the 9th overall pick in the 2020 draft. The selection of the big man Clingan probably puts centers Deandre Ayton or Robert Williams III on the trading block now. Jerami Grant’s status is probably up in the air, too. The Trail Blazers have two picks in tonight’s second round, the 4th, and 10th. Or 34th and 40th overall.
MLB:
The Mariners avoided being swept out of Tampa…beating the Rays 5 to 3 yesterday and stopping their three game losing streak. George Kirby picked up the win going six innings with an earned run on four hits. Cal Raleigh had a three-run homer. After the tough road trip losing 6 of 9 the Ms’ lead in the AL West has narrowed to 4 and a half games over Houston. It’s back to Seattle tomorrow to take on the Twins.
San Francisco held off the Cubs 4 to 3 last night. The Giants jumped out to an early 3 - 1 lead in the second inning, when Michael Conforto and David Villar hit back-to-back home runs. Luis Matos hit a tiebreaking solo shot in the bottom of the fifth. Luke Jackson came on in relief in the 5th for his 4th straight win. The chance for the four game series sweep starts today at 12:45.
Local:
The Elks were edged by Ridgefield last night 3 to 2. Those two runs came in the 8th inning but Bend couldn’t continue the rally in the 9th. They don’t lose too much ground in their 3rd place spot in the south standings though as Corvallis and Portland both lost too. That sets up a rubber match for the series final. First pitch tonight is at 6:35.
