NBA:
Draft Day Two saw some serious wheeling and dealing from Portland. They had 2 picks in the second round, the 4th, and 10th. Or 34th and 40th overall. They ended up trading both of them for future picks over the next 5 years, and getting cash from a couple of teams. The Trail Blazers will have 15 players on the roster when they go into training camp this fall. It’s very possible some of those under contract right now including Jerami Grant may not be here by the time camp rolls around. The trades and contract deals won’t be official until after July 6th.
MLB:
San Francisco lost to the Cubs 5 to 3 in 10 innings yesterday when reliever Luke Jackson gave up a 2 run walk-off homer. The Giants went down 3 to nothing early but tied it in the sixth, but couldn’t muster any more offense. They did win the four game series getting 4 games under .500 as they passed the midway point of the season that has seen a decimated starting pitching staff end up making SF one of the top teams in the majors for bullpen innings. Now the division leading Dodgers visit for a weekend series starting tonight at 7:15.
The Mariners lead in the AL West stands at 4 and a half games over Houston. They’re hoping home cooking in Seattle will help shake off the losing road trip. They’re at 46 and 37 but have lost 6 of their last 10. They’re set for a weekend series against Minnesota, who are second place in the AL Central at 45 and 36. First pitch against the Twins from T-Mobile Park is at 6:40.
Soccer:
The Portland Thorns are in 5th place on the NWSL table. They take on the expansion team Utah Royals tomorrow at 7.
The Portland Timbers are in 6th place in the MLS West. They host Minnesota tomorrow night who are right up above them in 5th place. Match time is 7:30 from Providence Park.
Local:
The Elks were shut out in Ridgefield 5 - 0 last night. That drops their record to 13 and 11, in third place behind Corvallis and Portland. Now its back to Bend for a non-league weekend series with the Northwest All Stars. First pitch tonight is at 6:35. There’s a firework show Sunday night after the game at Vince Genna.
