Local:

Bend fell 7 to 3 to the Pickles in Portland last night, getting swept to head into the all star break. Four Elks will be competing in Wednesday’s game in Bellingham.

MLB:

MLB Draft:

Oregon State’s Travis Bazanna was yesterday’s number one overall pick. The Cleveland Guardians made him the first second baseman ever taken at the top slot. The Australian is the second Beaver to go number 1 after Adley Rutschman in 2019.

The Miami Marlins selected pitcher Aiden May in the 2nd round, at the 70th overall pick.

OSU could have more players chosen. The draft continues today and tomorrow.

San Francisco walked off the Blue Jays 3 to 2 yesterday when Mike Yastzresmski scored because a cut-off throw got away after his triple. Toronto tied the game in the 9th, wasting Blake Snell’s seven shutout innings, six of them perfect. The Giants are in Denver for a series with the Rockies after the All Star break.

Seattle gave up a 2-run lead in Anaheim yesterday allowing the Angels to score three runs in the 8th inning for the victory. The Mariners dropped three of 4 in the series. Heading into the All-star break they take a one-game lead over the Astros, who will be in Seattle for a series Friday.

NBA:

The Trail Blazers’ top draft pick Donovan Clingan made his Summer League debut Saturday tallying five blocks, and 13 rebounds but the number seven overall pick told reporters after the game he had plenty to work on, including his 1 for 8 shooting. Portland plays Philadelphia today at 5:30.

Soccer:

The Portland Timbers have won 5 of their last 6 matches after shutting out Real Salt Lake Saturday to stay in 5th place in the MLS West. Next up is a meeting with first place LAFC.
