Big Ten Media Day

SPORTS 7-24-25

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

Coach Dan Lanning and Oregon players took the stage at Big Ten Media Day yesterday, saying they wanted to build on last season’s success and are motivated to move past the playoff loss to Ohio State. Team leaders talked about pushing their limits and embracing those new conference rivalries, while Lanning highlighted the need to “double down” on hard work. The Ducks season opens against Montana State August 30th.

One Duck defender will start fall camp slowly. Oregon football coach Dan Lanning said that linebacker Devon Jackson will be limited once practice begins as he recovers from the injury that caused him to miss spring ball. Jackson had 47 total tackles and one-and-a-half sacks last season, both career highs.

NFL:

San Francisco Coach Mike Shanahan expressed satisfaction with the team’s energy and focus after the first day of 49ers training camp. He highlighted the hard work from both veterans and new players, noting strong communication on the field. Shanahan said he’s excited to see competition ramp up in the coming days.

Coach Mike MacDonald says the energy at Seahawks training camp is electric and players arrived eager, focused, and ready to work. MacDonald notes the team is building strong chemistry and setting the tone for a competitive season ahead. MacDonald said new Offensive Coordinator Clint Kubiak has a high football acumen and is excited for what he’s bringing to the offense. Fans at the facility also gave a home-coming welcome to new free-agency addition Cooper Kupp. The wide-receiver played for Eastern Washington and went to high school in Yakima.

MLB:

At T-Mobile Park yesterday, the Seattle Mariners dropped the series finale to the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-2. Julio Rodríguez led the Mariners with two hits and an RBI, but Seattle’s offense struggled to find momentum, managing just six hits without Cal Raleigh in the lineup. Luis Castillo struck out seven over five innings but took the loss allowing 3 runs. Next up the Ms travel to Angel Stadium tomorrow to start a four game series with the Halos.

San Francisco beat the Braves 9-3 in Atlanta yesterday. Justin Verlander ended a 16-game winless streak, recording his first victory as a Giant. Rafael Devers hit two home runs and drove in four runs. Matt Chapman homered also. Next, the Giants are back home for the Mets starting tomorrow.

COLLEGE BASEBALL:

The Oregon State baseball team has received the Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association. Oregon State is one of 440 college programs from all levels of the sport. The Beavers, however, are one of just six teams at the Division I level who have earned the honor in all 10 years it has been in existence.

LOCAL:
