Five People Rescued From River Near La Pine

LA PINE, OR -- Five people were rescued Sunday after they became stuck on a large tree partially submerged in the Deschutes River, between the Tetherow Boat Launch and La Pine State Park. La Pine firefighters responded just after 1 p.m. when the group reported they were floating on inner tubes and became trapped by the swift current.

One person was caught under the tree, but was kept afloat by a life jacket. They also reported that the cold water and fast-moving current had sapped all their strength and they were struggling to hang on. Firefighters with a rapid deployment craft responded with Deschutes County Search and Rescue. They were exhausted and treated for minor injuries and hypothermia by medics, but otherwise okay.

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office confirms the group is not affiliated with the green canoe found submerged in the river near La Pine, Saturday. This was the third water rescue call in four days.
