(Portland, OR) -- The Portland Police Bureau and the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office are applying for federal money to be used to make a dent in a backlog of rape kits. Officials say about half the rape kits that have been collected by Portland police over 29 years have yet to be submitted to a lab. The grant would also be used to help fund more detectives, a prosecutor, and crime lab workers. The money would come from 41-million dollars in grants to be dedicated to helping clear rape-kit backlogs across the country.
