NV Governor: Yucca Mountain Unsuitable For Waste Dump

(Carson City, NV)  --  Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval says the proposed nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain is not suitable because the federal government doesn't have land and water rights necessary to move forward with the project.  Sandoval made the remarks in a letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which held a public hearing on the proposal last night in Amargosa Valley, Nevada.  The NRC says an environmental study on the Yucca Mountain project shows that contamination risk is low and not dangerous to humans, but many state and federal officials in Nevada are against the proposal.  A decision on the project will have an impact on the storage of radioactive waste from Washington's Hanford nuclear site.
