WSDOT: Viaduct Won't Reopen Until Safe

(Seattle, WA)  --  The Alaskan Way Viaduct on Highway 99 in Seattle is now closed, but it could remain closed longer than the scheduled two weeks.  Washington State Department of Transportation officials say the viaduct won't reopen until it's deemed safe for public travel.  Officials say the top of the tunneling machine named Bertha will be only fifteen feet below the foundation of the viaduct, so the job will begin slowly.  Engineers will constantly monitor for any new cracks that appear on the surface of the viaduct, and crews will perform a full inspection to determine if the structure is safe after the drilling is finished.
