Constitutional Amendment Would Have Legislature Set School Funding

(Olympia, WA)  --  A Republican state lawmaker wants the Legislature to have sole authority when it comes to setting funding for public schools in Washington.  Spokane Senator Mike Baumgartner has pre-filed a joint resolution, proposing an amendment to the state Constitution that would remove the Washington State Supreme Court from the process.  Baumgartner says while he expects difficulty in getting both the House and Senate to provide a two-thirds majority to get the amendment before voters, he tells the "Spokesman-Review" the amendment could start the negotiations over policy and spending on K-through-12 schools.
