State Lawmakers Respond To Transgender Military Ban

(Portland, OR)  --  Oregon lawmakers are speaking out against President Trump's Twitter announcement of a ban on transgenders in the military.  Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden as well as Representative Suzanne Bonamici have all released statements calling the ban discriminatory.  Merkley says that the military should accept the contributions of "all patriots who want to serve" the nation, adding that "discrimination doesn't make America safer."  Wyden says, quote, "I cannot imagine making national security policy by Tweet," adding that the ban is "clearly designed to discriminate rather than focus on those who can serve our country."  Bonamici is asking the Defense Department to continue accepting transgender enlistees, saying that Trump's decision "goes against the values that our military fights to protect."
