Spanish Woman Jailed By Customs For Having Wrong Visa

(Portland, OR)  --  The ACLU says a 22-year-old college student from Spain who flew to Portland for a cultural experience was immediately sent to jail upon her arrival.  The organization says Christina Alonso was set to spend six weeks with a friend in Oregon this summer to work on her English and teach Spanish for an allowance of one-hundred dollars a week.  However, customs agents at Portland International Airport told her she had the wrong visa and sent her to Northern Oregon Regional Correction Facility.  Alonso spent 48 hours in the jail with general population inmates, where she says she was denied medical treatment and access to her belongings.  The ACLU says she was flown back to Spain after the 48 hours.
