(Portland, OR) -- The Portland State University Student Union is calling for the disarming of campus police following the officer-involved shooting death of a Navy veteran and father near campus. Student Union members held a rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square yesterday in remembrance of Jason Washington. Witnesses say Washington was trying to break up a fight outside a dorm room near Southwest Broadway and College Street early Friday morning when his gun fell out of his holster onto the ground. Witnesses say Washington was trying to pick his gun up when officers on the scene opened fire, killing him. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office confirms that Washington did have a concealed carry permit for the gun.
